For the first time he opened up to me. He said that after his grandad died he lost a lot of his warmth, he had to grow a lot in the space of a year. He said he wasn’t the same as he was before. When I asked him what he would say if someone asked ‘so how are you both doing, are you happy?’ He said ‘no, not really’ which was a real sting. But then, it’s the same for me too. I’m happy when I’m with him but when we’re apart it all catches up with me and I would probably say the same. We kept coming back around to; if it’s problems with ourselves which is affecting our relationship, or if its a problem with our relationship which is affecting us individually. Why are we both not making the effort anymore? Have we got too comfortable? Will we be able to get back to where we used to be?
‘We’ve got to try,’ he said tearfully and I nodded.
But with every talk, more truth comes out.
