Glitzless streets, the true reality of where I am

If you peel away all the glitz and the glamour, what do you really have left?

Streets with uneven pavements that weave alongside one way roads, heaving with noisy taxis and cyclists irritating them. The large, shiny Windows that peer out onto these scenes are empty and hollow, shop assistants search for some entertainment, desperately bored. Shopping bag clad tourists amble slowly up and down, not looking up at the beautiful buildings but down at their phones, oblivious to the world around them.
Such a price tag that swings to the sound of the location, but being here just makes me sad. Do I appreciate it, not at all, should I, well maybe I should. I try to but the days feel so long that when I'm finally free for some fresh air I just want to get away as quickly as possible. The crowds and the plooms of thick, diesel smoke one has to clamber through before getting to a park feels almost counterproductive. And when you're there is packed with stressed people looking to relax...what am I doing here? Summer isn't far away and I don't think I can bear the thought of spending any future sunny days shut in a freezing basement, sorting through other people's precious pieces of luxury, a thankless task. I need to sort this out.

I feel this way often. I live in NYC, and tourists often remark to me how fortunate I am to live here, but since my internal map isn't so organized, I am blind to the beauty that surrounds me.
